Fred Coupe started trading in the 1920’s from a service station he shared with his business partner Mr Kay opposite the site where we now trade from. The historic house pictured behind is where Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America stayed in the year 1771 and 1775. It is believed that he fixed the first lightning conductor in England to the wall of this house.
In the 1930’s Fred Coupe parted company with Mr Kay and acquired the land opposite where he sold petrol and dealt in scrap and car parts which became very lucrative (left).
In 1945, Fred’s son John Coupe (known as Jack) came home from serving in the R.A.F. Before the war he was a Professional footballer for Preston North End but he decided the time was right to retire and help his father in the Family Business. Jack was keen to steer the business into car sales and in 1954 was appointed the BMC Franchise which later became British Leyland.
In 1960 Jacks eldest son Michael Coupe joined the business aged 15years followed by Peter Coupe 2 years later.
Michael and Peter were keen to expand the business. Having looked at a few different brands they were tempted by relatively unknown make called Datsun due to the value and range of the cars. In 1974 they were appointed dealers and built a brand new purpose built showroom and petrol forecourt.(see left)
This was a period of rapid growth for the Family firm.
The brand became Nissan and the motor company continued to bring out fresh new model. In 1986 Nissan built their own factory at Sunderland which remains one of the most efficient Car plants in the world today.In 1988 Michael's son John Coupe joined the business followed by Peter's sons Julian in 1989 and Charles 6 year later.
As you can see the Fred Coupe showroom has continued to expand and evolve through time. Our Partnership with Nissan spans over 40 years making us one of the oldest Dealers in the Country.
In 2016 we also came Authorised Repairers for the Infiniti brand This is a niche High Premium range owned by Nissan and we cover all service and warranty work for the North West of England.
